The Side Saddlery
Gorgeous Knoud Side Saddle. Knoud was an American maker of side saddles
out of New York. This is a gorgeous example of a hunting side saddle from this
prestigious maker. Ready for the show ring! Show off your gaited horse or
The saddle has a Mayhew breakaway stirrup assembly and comes with a new
stirrup leather with a Mayhew fitting and the correct hook & slide for
adjustment. The off side flap is hinged much like a Martin & Martin
to avoid the nuisance of an overgirth.
The panes are nicely flocked for a level ride, covered in good English
leather. The panels extend under the safe to support the lady's right leg
comfortably - a nice feature if the horse has narrow shoulders!
Seat length is 21" from the front of the fixed head to the rear of
the doe skin. Seat width is 12.25". Gullet measures 7.5"inches
between the points at the level of the D rings and 16 inches from point
to point, making it a medium to medium-wide tree for a horse without a lot
of flair to his ribs & shoulders.
While the gullet is reinforced, this saddle is not recommended for hunting
or jumps over 2'3".
Knoud, like almost all side saddle makers, used trees made by companys
that built just saddle trees. This saddle was found to be marked on the
tree "Messrs. Sa--- Hunter & Co. (7 years with _______ & Sons,
London Length ___ Seat. 12 1/4 Fitting N #10LS 16 Duncalfe Street, Walsall.
Also stamped on the tree in red ink was October 28, 1903 England.
