The Side Saddlery is pleased to be able to offer an fine, older english side saddle made by Alex Olgivie & Co, Glasgow, Scotland. While the spot for the old paper label is barely visible, the maker is clearly stamped into the leather under the off side. We have not found an exact date on the saddle, but we estimate it was made between 1900 and 1920. The saddle has just come to us from England where it was used to hunt and show all season. It is in excellent, sound condition.

The seat is newer, dark doe skin over a pigskin seat with pigskin pommels. There is an old patch to the upright pommel - well done and invisible under an apron or skirt. The doeskin offers good grip when you need it most!

The safe is quite unusual! The safe is padded, yet has the smooth exterior your would expect in a close contact safe like an Owen. The padding is placed between two layers so it has a smooth, clean finish. The safe is broken in to put your leg in a good position. There is a small thigh block to assist in keeping your left leg in a good position over fences as well.

The saddle has a fixed stirrup hanger and comes complete with a stirrup leather, safety stirrup, and newer balance girth. The overgirth is a fixed strap from the near and off side flaps.

The saddle has linen over serge panels in very good condition. The edges have been whitened for showing. While the saddle lacks D rings for a sandwich case or breast collar, the consigner indicated that it is reinforced with a hunting bar for jumping.

There is an old, well done repair on the offside flap that is seen in the pictures.

The seat length is 21" from the front of the fixed head to the rear of the doe skin. Seat width is 13". Gullet measures 5 1/4 inches at the top, 8.5 inches between where the D rings would be (to the tree) and 18" between the points, making it a medium tree with flair between the points - good for a horse with a wider shoulders and good withers.

Alex Olgivie & Co. English side saddle from the era of the good old name saddles! $1,400.00
